Mark Group Director to Speak at House of Commons

Monday 15 February 2010

Bill Rumble, Commercial Director at Leicester-based Mark Group will be addressing prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) at a landmark reception at the House of Commons on Monday 22nd February, calling for support in driving change towards the use of renewable technology by domestic consumers.

The reception is being organised by the Micropower Council and will see Mr Rumble speak alongside Peter Ainsworth MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Environment Group and Jonathan Porritt, Former Chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission. All will be working to educate the PPCs on the issues affecting the adoption of microgeneration* by domestic homeowners and hopefully, engage their support in driving future policy.

Commenting on his speaking opportunity, Bill said: “The UK is facing some fairly steep targets for reducing its energy consumption. In July 2009 the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan called for 1.5million homes to have microgeneration solutions by 2020, but the reality is that currently only around 150,000 homes operate renewable technology systems and only 20,000 new installations are being fitted each year. The maths simply don’t add up.”

Many of the PPCs attending the reception are likely to be amongst the 200 plus new MPs who will make up the next British Parliament and with a General Election looming, this is a crucial time for setting agendas and shaping the future adoption of microgeneration by domestic homeowners.

Bill continued: “Government Policy needs to drive change. Funding needs to be in place and the industry needs to be capable of delivering the technology. This reception aims to engage PPCs, address the issues that need to be tackled and secure commitment for a positive and productive route forwards.”

The Mark Group has been established since 1974 and has grown to become a leading installer of renewable energy technologies. To date the company has made more than 1.5 million homes in the UK more energy efficient.

*Microgeneration is the generation of power on a small scale – for example solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and heat pumps.
