Mark Group Director Takes the Stand on Renewable Heat Incentive

Friday 05 March 2010

As thousands flocked to London’s Earls Court this week to see the latest products and innovations in the world of ‘Ecobuild’, Mark Group Commercial Director, Bill Rumble, took centre stage addressing industry colleagues and opinion-formers on the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Part of the ‘Harnessing Heat’ seminar on Wednesday 3rd March, Rumble joined colleagues from the Combined Heat and Power Association, British Gas New Energy and the Solar Trade Association, speaking on the challenges and opportunities predicted in warming up the market to the Incentive which is due to launch in April 2011.

The seminar explained the proposed structure of the RHI alongside anticipated figures for payments to the consumer. However, the clear message communicated by each speaker to the audience of over 200 delegates, was the sheer scale of the mountain that needed to climbed to creating a mass market for the microgeneration, and for achieving the target of seeing 1.5 million UK homes adopt renewable technology by 2020.

Rumble said: “The crowds at this year’s Ecobuild are evidence of how fast interest in this industry is growing. We now have the technology we need to deliver microgeneration of both heat and power on a mass scale, but the adoption of this by the end user is still lagging behind. One of the reasons for this, is the lack of suitable policy framework – something which the Renewable Heat Incentive should address.”

Questions taken from the floor challenged how this incentive would sit alongside the Feed in Tariff, due to launch in April of this year, and other schemes such as CERT (Carbon Emissions Reductions Target).

Rumble continued: “We are extremely encouraged that a package of incentives is beginning to develop to drive the future of renewable technology in the UK. However, it is very much a case of ‘work in progress’ which will take the Government working in partnership with the industry and the end user to deliver a successful strategy.”

Mark Group is the leading installer of energy savings solutions to the domestic UK market. To date it has made around two million homes more energy efficient and supports the Department of Energy and Climate Change, advising on policy-making and securing its position at the forefront of microgeneration technology adoption.
