Toddlers Triumph in £45,000 Mark Group Installation

Wednesday 17 February 2010

Thanks to national campaign Project: Renovate and the Mark Group, the UK’s largest domestic installer of energy saving solutions, three children’s nurseries have realised their green potential.

The 2009 Project: Renovate competition was launched 12 months ago by popular children’s character Bob the Builder in partnership with Knauf Insulation. Children’s nurseries were invited to enter by explaining how they would benefit from an energy efficient renovation and the steps they would need to take to make the learning environment more comfortable for children and staff.

Entries were received from nurseries all over the country, but just three winners were selected to receive an energy efficient renovation worth up to £15,000 each.

Commenting on the Project, Mark Group Commercial Director, Bill Rumble, said: “Energy saving is all about education and where better to start than with nursery-aged children. This is the second year Project: Renovate has run and its efforts are working hard to build an understanding amongst young children and their carers about how we look after the environment.”

The winning nurseries were Happy Days in Cornwall, Viewforth in Fife and Safe n Sound in Hull:

  • Happy Days Nursery was awarded external wall insulation from Knauf Insulation to help boost the thermal efficiency of the building
  • The traditional design of Viewforth Nursery meant its annual energy consumption was too high. The Nursery was awarded Knauf Insulation cavity wall and loft insulation to meet current Government requirements, as well as solar hot water panels which will provide between 50 and 70% of the Nursery’s hot water needs from sunlight
  • Finally, Safe n Sound Nursery had to leave radiators on all weekend to ensure it would be warm-enough on Monday mornings. The judges awarded 200mm Space Blanket loft insulation, as well as solar hot water panels which will not only improve the comfort of the Nursery but help reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Bill Rumble concluded: “Our installers have now completed all three projects and the nurseries are beginning to enjoy the benefits not only of their warmer surroundings, but also their experiences of renewable solutions and knowing they are doing ‘their bit’ for the environment.”

Bob the Builder’s Project: Renovate offers nurseries and families across the UK the chance to win energy efficient renovations or home insulation packages. It also helps young children learn how to reduce, reuse, recycle and become more energy efficient.
