Hampton Hill Junior School

May 2008

Hampton Hill Junior School in Middlesex was opened on its present site in 1928. Initially a public elementary school, it was reorganised and renamed Hampton Hill Junior School in 1958.

The Challenge

Mark Group became involved in the project through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase 2 and worked in partnership with Landmark Energy. The programme provides grants for the installation of microgeneration technologies in a range of buildings to include households, community organisations, public, private and the non-profit sectors.

The London Borough of Richmond is committed to becoming the most sustainable borough in London. They have made tackling climate change a priority and seek to set a clear and consistent lead in promoting energy efficiency and sustainable energy production through a £1 million project.

Following the Green Initiative, Hampton Hill School applied for grants to install micro technologies and was successful in receiving part funding through the LCBP Phase 2 and part through the London Borough of Richmond.

The school already had a Solar PV system installed when Mark Group became involved in the project, however Mark Group were able to survey the school with the intent to install a Solar Hot Water System, which would in turn help to reduce the schools heating costs by up to 40%.

The Solution

Mark Group, were able to install 20 Worcester Bosch FKC solar panels on the roof of the school, angled to capture sunlight for the maximum amount of time each day.

The solar panels mean there is a constant supply of hot water to the school, and the panels are expected to provide sufficient heat for all the school’s needs in the summer months and a substantial part in winter.

The work was carried out in the summer of 2007 so there was no disruption for the children.

The grant scheme played an important part of the process to enable Hampton Hill School to install such technologies. Not only do the new systems, help to reduce heating and electricity costs, but also reducing the schools carbon footprint at the same time.
The school is currently in the process of installing a Wind Turbine.

Principal Consultant for the Works, Peter Williams of Landmark Energy, said: “We are very pleased with the work undertaken by the Mark Group who proved themselves a very capable, competent and caring installer.

“The solar hot water system and the new boilers should make a significant contribution in reducing the running costs of the school.”
