The Customer
Westleigh Developments is a leading midlands property developer, specialising in the construction of new build, commercial and residential schemes. The Company was working on a project to provide affordable housing and wheelchair-accessible bungalows in Uppingham for Spire Homes, – part of the Longhurst Group and in conjunction with Rutland County Council and the Housing Corporation.
The Challenge
Spire Home’s plans included a provision for renewable energy technology and many of the units were to benefit from Solar Hot Water (Solar Thermal) systems. However, the development needed to come in on time, on budget and qualify for an Eco Homes rating of ‘Very Good’. Westleigh Developments knew Mark Group was up to the challenge.
Mark Group’s expert design team were tasked with finding the most cost effective renewable technology solution, identifying first of all the most suitable properties for installation and then considering the individual heating and hot water requirements of each. And, in order to achieve an Eco Homes rating of ‘Very Good’, the team needed to identify the most suitable insulation solutions for the properties, to ensure they would be as thermally efficient as possible.
The Solution
Mark Group recommended Solar Hot Water (Solar Thermal) as the most cost effective renewable technology solution for 25 of the Spire Home properties. Through the Low Carbon Building Programme, £30,000 of funding was secured for the installation and Knauf Frametherm Glass Mineral Wool was selected as the most suitable insulation material to achieve the ‘U’ values (heat transfer) for Eco Homes rating: ‘Very Good’.
